Ned Flanders Crossing Bike and Pedestrian Bridge

A new car-free bridge connection on Flanders Street over Interstate 405 makes it easier, faster, and safer to walk, roll, bike, and run between Northwest Portland, The Pearl, and Downtown. The bridge opened in June 2021. Learn more.

PBOT’s Northwest in Motion Plan

Northwest in Motion (NWIM) is a five-year implementation strategy to identify, prioritize, and develop a set of feasible projects in Northwest Portland. These projects aim to make walking, biking, and riding public transit safer and more comfortable options for traveling to, from, and within the district.

The plan was adopted by City Council on October 8, 2020. Learn more.

Recent improvements include:

  • Paint-and-post curb extensions to reduce pedestrian crossing distance at 23rd & Quimby, 23rd & Pettygrove, and 23rd & Savier

  • Transforming NW Pettygrove Street into a neighborhood greenway from NW 25th Ave to NW 11th Ave, and adding a bikeway connection to Naito Pkwy via NW 11th Ave and NW Overton St in the North Pearl area

    • Added motor vehicle diverters between NW 11th Ave and NW 18th Avenue

    • Installed speed humps from NW 22nd Ave to NW 25th Ave

    • In progress in 2023:

      • Adding speed bumps from NW 19th Ave to NW 22nd Ave

      • Pavement markings (sharrows) and wayfinding signage along the entire route

      • Improved crossings at 14th, 16th, 18th, and 19th avenues

Other improvements coming in 2023 include street resurfacing projects on NW Quimby St, NW Pettygrove St, and NW Raleigh St from 19th to 25th, including ADA curb ramp upgrades at every intersection.

NW/SW 20th Ave Neighborhood Bikeway

This project improves conditions for bicycling and walking by slowing auto traffic speeds, reducing auto traffic volumes, upgrading crossings of busy streets, and creating new connections to existing bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure on or adjacent to SW and NW 20th Ave. Learn more.

 

NW 20th Ave Local Improvement District

Construction is complete on the NW 20th Ave Local Improvement District (LID) project that reconnects the Slabtown neighborhood and NW Portland. The extension of NW 20th Avenue and NW Thurman Street created a new intersection and a new, more efficient, route for people driving and walking in this growing area. This project was supported by a $7.5 million LID funded by participating property owners in the area. Learn more.

Portland Streetcar Extension Planning

The Portland Streetcar System Concept Plan envisions a future connection to Montgomery Park and to the Hollywood Town Center to provide new streetcar service to NW and NE Portland neighborhoods. The Montgomery Park to Hollywood Transit and Land Use Development Strategy (MP2H) is kicking off in 2020 and will create an equitable development plan for potential transit-oriented districts around Slabtown and surrounding neighborhoods.
